review 1: I would give this book 3.5 stars. I liked the book but by the end I think it dropped off and it seemed as if the author did not know how to end it. It just sort of fizzled out. I also felt there were pieces of the story missing and resulted in some confusion and segmented story line. The back story (November 2004: Erin's Season) should have been inserted in the proper spot in the book and would have remedied some of the confusion.
review 2: For a debut novel I thought this was very entertaining and thought-provoking. The Keller women are 5 generations of first-borns living in the same house. Anna is the matriarch and is still mobile and feisty at age 112. Also living in this house is her 90-year old daughter, Bets; Calliope, Bets' 65 year old daughter. Call
... moreie's daughter, Deb (45 years old) doesn't live there long due to circumstances I won't reveal, and Deb's daughter, Erin, has grown up with her grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma. The relationships between these mothers and daughters and grandmothers and granddaughters is complex and very believeable. Some of them are hiding secrets and all of them have trouble relating to their own mothers. This novel resonated with me on many levels and I highly recommend this book, especially for mothers and daughters. less
