review 1: There's something that is really enjoyable here with the writing style. It's not, as with it seems many other novels I've picked up lately, first person and that helps. Without any disorienting jumping you're able to see how all the characters are reacting to something at any given point and understand them more for it. Each character is a self-admitted stereotype which gives a bit of a characterization shortcut in the begining, but by the end each is fleshed out and made his own person. I also liked the Screaming giving the world a vague sense of forewarning and putting people on edge, instead of the typical virus x evolves and spreads to people scenario.
review 2: The beginning of this book really captured my attention. The author does an excellent job of des... morecribing an "infection" that basically takes out most of the world in a two day period. That part of the book is frightening and believable. The main characters in the book are also interesting and I found myself wanting to see how this played out for each of them. Now comes the part where my realism gets in the way. At a point in the book the infection that has, until this point, basically turned people into zombies, mutates and creates mutants. The description of some of these creatures involved elephant looking things, grasshopper legged creatures and 30-ft. monsters. I got lost.....no reasonable explanation for the mutations and to have this start with people it seemed too far of a stretch to jump to something so dramatically different. I've read other reviews where some found this aspect of the story to be strong so it will really depend on what you are looking for. less
