review 1: The set up here is something you've probably seen before-- escaped dangerous prisoners, horrible storm closing in, hero left mostly on their own. So why should you read this? Several reasons. It's not the ingredients, it's what the chef does with them.Writing: Craig Johnson is just plain a damn good writer. He creates a great world, peoples it, and puts his own spin on events. He has some beautiful imagery, and his own mythos. The books have a mystical element to them almost wholly missing from the tv series. I am a fan of the tv show, but, as usual, the books are much better.Characters: Walt Longmire is a great hero. He does his best, and beyond what people would expect, to protect his people. He's a driven man, and really admirable. He'd also probably laugh at ... morebeing called a hero. The rest of the cast is nicely fleshed out through the series, although this book is close to a Walt solo story.World Building: Johnson has created a believable continuity. His characters work well, major events have repercussions, and various subplots keep building. The Longmire series is damn good, and this may be the best one of them. Recommended to fans of crime stories, adventure, and modern Westerns.
review 2: Wow!! This book was freakin' awesome! Definitely on the dark side and it was really all Walt - very little Henry, Vic, Sancho, Ferg, etc. And, I even figured out the mystery! But, it was amazing!! The forest fire scene was stunning, so well written I feel like I've seen it on the screen. Even with Walt freezing his buns off in the Bighorn Mountains - I still want to go to Wyoming. I can't even put my finger on what exactly made this book so incredibly engaging - it was just an awesome read from cover to cover (or click to click, in my case). I love these Longmire books! (just wish the TV show could even come close to the awesomeness of the books...) less
