review 1: Easy to read book about a week in the lives of six people, with the common connection being a hotel in a politically unstable, unidentified Latin American country. The characters are unique and colorful. Within each chapter, the author alternates between each character's story, with change encounters. Although the characters are involved with serious situations, such as political assassinations, adoption of foreign babies, and cheap factory labor, the book is entertaining.
review 2: This was just ok for me. I didn't care for the news clips throughout the book, I felt that they interrupted the flow of the story and were mostly unnecessary. Also, the fate of a lot of the characters was left to guess at the end of this novel and that's almost always frustrating
... more to me, this book not excluded. I did, however, like the characters and thought that they were fairly well developed (much to my surprise as other reviewers did not feel the same). less

Assembles a widely diverse cast of characters a la "Bel Canto," with an equally poignant ending.
