review 1: Story of two best friends, whose feelings develop into something "more," at the same time as Oliver starts suffering from a sleep disorder and some resulting actions that drives them apart. Loved premise of story, and Wilimington NC setting for start of book. Once Oliver is hospitalized in NY and Althea joins some vegan punk-rockers in Brooklyn, the story lost some of its reality and immediacy for me. Still a realistic portrayal of a relationship that evolves, in sometimes uncomfortable ways. A good read-alike for Eleanor and Park.
review 2: Christ. This book slayed me. It was just so raw. I saw myself in Oliver, and I saw myself in Althea, even though I felt as though I am nothing like either of them. I think it was mostly I could relate to their relationship
... moreand their situation. Spoilers ahead, don't continue if you don't want to know. This is the first time I've read a book about guy and girl bff's that don't end up together. And in a way, I don't think it would have worked if they did even if I was still holding out hope until the bitter end. These two could bring out the best and worst in each other and maybe that would not have worked for them at all. Althea needed to find herself, her place in the world that was independent of Oliver, and Oliver needed to do the same without Althea. Although I felt that Oliver knew who he was and what he wanted. His disease didn't do him any favors and it fucked him up, but he was still Oliver. He still knew who he was. Althea did not know who she was at all, except angry, very very angry. My heart still hurts for Althea not getting what she wanted, but I liked that she knew she would survive without Oliver. She might carry that hurt around for a while, but she would eventually put it behind her. I hope anyway. It's what I want for her. I have to say, also, that this is the first time a book has made me sad and no died! less
