review 1: This book is not for everyone. It's fairly academic, and it's (obviously) extremely pro-love. Nehring uses examples from literature and from the lives of writers to argue for passionate, transgressive love as a vital part of our lives. As someone who recently ended a five-year relationship and started a new one, I found particular relevance in this book, and I would even call it inspiring, even though I disagreed with some of its points.
review 2: I love anyone who dares to point out that twenty-first century heterosexual relationships are suffering at best, totally fukakte at worst. Nehring doesn't explicitly state she's focused on male-female connections, but her use of literary and historical examples of this type imply it. She attributes this contemporary d... moreilemma to a denial of much of the emotional currency that supported the traditional romantic economy. Is everything she says reasonable? Not necessarily, but at least she's saying it. less
