I wasn’t as excited to read this book as I have been for the others by Julie James. The reason is that I wanted this one to be featuring Sam Wilkins and not Cade. And because Cade called Kyle a terrorist, which made me not like him. But if you haven’t read the previous books of the series, this is going not going to makes much sense, so let’s get to business.
Cade Morgan is a US Attorney. He’s cool, calm and collected, not to mention very good at his job. Brooke is a businesswoman and — in one word — a workaholic. Both of them have had terrible luck with their love lives. Cade finds it difficult to really open up to someone and Brooke thinks that sex and the occasional date — when she can find some time off work, of course — are all it takes for a good relationship. So when they meet because of a case Cade needs Brooke’s help with, they seem to be a perfect match. They both suck at relationship so there should be no issue keeping things casual. Because that always works, doesn’t it?
Anyway, despite the hangups I had about Cade, I like him. He’s such an organized guy, and I relate to that. Loved Brooke too, her ability to shake him a little, her drive to achieve and her practicality, even if the latter two did get in the way of her personal life.
This was an emotional read. But not in a sad way. In that it had a lot of emotion, a lot of heart, to it. Cade and Brooke’s relationship was a slow burn, with a lot of bickering, obviously. The author took a long time to develop their relationship with each other and really immerse us in their lives, to show us where they were going wrong and why, and how they slowly figured that out on for themselves. My favourite thing about contemporary novels is getting to know the characters and about romance novel, seeing them connect with each other. Both job were accomplished very well.
In the end, all I can say is that is yet another great novel by Julie James and I highly recommend it.
