review 1: Many people know about the Black Death during the 17th Century and is talked about often….but it’s not often I read Historical Fiction on this this subject with a blend of witch-craft, alchemy, murders and I found this an intriguing blend. What caught my attention right away was the title of the book and the main character’s occupation is a Thief Taker. He finds stolen items for people. I find that extremely fascinating and wondered how this would be woven into the story…Overall I enjoyed the historical aspects of it and the authors detail to horrors of the Black Death. However a few scenes lost my attention and I felt the plot could have been better built and I wanted to see Charlie’s character flushed out a bit more than it was.I definitely will be on the lookou... moret for more stories from this author and have rated this book three stars.
review 2: I was left a little disappointed with this book. The cover pretty much leaped off the screen at me and the blurb, along with the endorsements enticed me in as well. It had all the trappings of a great period piece, however, somehow it just didn't work for me. The male protagonist is quite believable although some of his exploits not so much, but the female lead just irritated and was, for me, a major weakness in the plot. Some of the descriptions of London were pretty good, the imagery was strong, but then this was counterbalanced by the Zombie like behavior of the plague victims. In fairness, its quite clear that the author is a very capable writer and I quite liked her turn of phrase (I liked it a lot in some parts!) but on the whole the loose plot and 'overly fortunate' characters, aided by the Deus Ex Machina, lacked credibility for me, which was a pity. less

Very good read - one-part Walking Dead, one-part historical fiction, one-part murder mystery.

Good historical fiction thriller of London in the plague-filled 1600's.
