review 1: This would be a good "beach read". It is a plot-driven, fast paced historical novel. However, I did not think that all of the plot developments were adequately explained although it is clear that the author does try to lay clues to set up the story. I also found the characterization superficial and the dialogue somewhat cliched and anachronistic. On the other hand, the description of London during the plague year of 1666 did pique my interest and made me want to read more about that period. Overall, an entertaining quick-read.
review 2: I thought I would love this book, but I didn't. It was very atmospheric, yes, sometimes disturbingly so. But it was also full of gratuitous sex and torture scenes, spelled out in gory detail. Also, as some other reviewers fo... moreund, I thought the number of times Charlie and Maria found clues or assistance from conveniently-placed acquaintances, added up to a LOT of coincidences. I could not quite lose myself in the story due to all those coincidences. less
