review 1: I was very into this book almost the entire way through. I really enjoyed the concept and the way the story played out. I didn't like how it ended. It might just be a personal preference, but I really dislike when books have the ending where everything is magically fixed. I realize it's part of the story with all the magic and changing the past and everything. But I really think the ending could have been written differently and made more sense as to why things took place the way they did. But overall it was a very good read.
review 2: The writing in this book is so awful it actually makes my stomach turn. For example, on page 137 when Balog writes, "The perfume and cologne and whatever else they were wearing smelled worse than the incense at Babe's tent, but t
... morehe view of the girls' asses made it tolerable." ...what? First of all, there's no need for language like that, and secondly it doesn't even flow. The main character, Nick, is nowhere near badass enough to use phrasing like that. It sounds clumsy and dumb. It's like the Balog couldn't decide between more sophisticated phrasing or casual writing. It just makes me angry. She also focused way too much on Nick's lack of charm with girls and how scared he is of blowing it with Taryn, how "any other guy would have gone in for the kill. Instead, I froze up." Their relationship developed out of nowhere. They just kept spontaneously running into each other or following one another around town. There was no such thing as character development at all. Nick remained this whiny, self-pitying teenager who's only solution to his curse is to ignore the future in his head, and the headaches that go with it. None of the other characters have any depth whatsoever. The "You Wills" were a very cool concept, until Balog decided they were no longer necessary and just stopped including them about 90 pages in. All of a sudden, Nick could just ignore the script and the ridiculous pain in his head, where in the beginning that had been the cause of a major dramatic scene. The plot twists were ridiculous, out of nowhere, confusing, had nothing to do with the original problem, and the ending was lazy, sloppy, and thrown together. I'm extremely disappointed with this book. The concept was super cool, but the execution was awful. Waste of my time. less
