review 1: Honestly, I am holding back from giving this book 4 stars. The 4th star would only be for the 1930's gentlemanly redneck that I wish I could have. I will admit, this book was very refreshing. Something very different. I like the way the spirits of the river thing was put together. The story behind it was perfect and how it all added up but..the way it was actually written and put together made the quality go down. Ki was whiny and annoying. I felt bad for her boyfriend and cousin to be stuck with her. Every page was a contradiction with what she said. What happens with Justin is no surprise. I saw that coming from a mile away. Trey...sweet lord. He is my 4th star. I'll admit, there could have been a bit more to get to know his personality but...with what was given..he was ... moregood enough for me. :P This was a very nice book but it had potential to be AMAZING. The story line, the plot, the ending, the build up and Trey could have been improved. Heck, even Ki could have been saved but it just fell flat. It was not a horrible book though. I did enjoy it quite a bit. But like I said, it fell flat in many aspects.
review 2: Kiandra Levesque's mother committed suicide by walking into a river when Ki was 7. Ki's father decided to move her somewhere safe afterward - Maine. Now Ki has lied to her father and has planned to spend a weekend with her cousin and her boyfriend whitewater rafting on the Dead River. Once there, Ki begins seeing visions and hearing voices. A young man named Trey cautions her to leave so she will stay safe but a beguiling fellow named Jack lures her to her death. Then she finds out the secret of her heritage. It was an interesting story but Ki constantly kept doing everything she was warned not to do just like in the horror movie when everyone runs outside to look while leaving the door open so the monster can get inside. Ki was just beyond annoying. It was interesting to hear about real and fictional places in Maine but the dialog from the "real Mainah" was rather condescending. less

Teen book club Jan 2014 - rather disappointing. Started strong and creepy but quickly became hokey.

A tale of a girl who has visions. This was just about as confusing as Inception.

It kept my interest the entire read. Good, fun, supernatural story.

Ugh. This book had such potential but it fell completely flat.
