review 1: I really loved this book. I'd been in such a drought of "eh" books lately, and this was a refreshing surprise. The first book in a new series, and I'm totally bummed that the second book isn't out until the end of next month. Everything about this book was fun - from the quirky title names to the illustrations, to the writing style that met you figure some things out easily while keeping much still hidden. The characters were memorable and interesting, particularly Max, and I can't wait to read more about his adventures.
review 2: I'm not too sure about this WAW possibility -- it is the first in the series and could stand alone, but the main mystery of what happened to Max's parents continues into the next book. There's even a sneak peek into the next book at
... morethe end of this one. This first mystery is historical fiction from the early 1900's and starts with a family of actors being asked to come to India to perform and train a theater company to stay and entertain the maharajah. They agree but when the son Max goes to join the parents onboard the ship to go to India, his parents are gone and there is no such ship at the docks. His parents had left a strange message for him that he didn't understand and he felt abandoned but was worried about his parents getting caught up in some plot. So he goes to his grandmother's house, but since his parents had always told him he could live on his own when he turned 12, Max decided to try it. He starts solving problems for people for pay and is pretty good at it. This is a yes vote for me, but it's long and I was able to figure out the problems, too, so it's a borderline yes. less

Entertaining. My only "complaint" is it jumps a little too much.
