review 1: Always wished I had lived through the 60s and love the music of that period so I swiped my cousin's BEA arc. I read it in one sitting. Kept saying one more chapter until 2 in the morning. I thought it captured the music business and integrated the racial tension of the time in it's unique mystery/ love story. The heroine is smart, funny and matures through the story in so many ways Don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I won't say any more.. I would just recommend it strongly.
review 2: Overall, this isn't *all* that terrible of a book, but it's not incredibly memorable, either. I was pretty pumped to read it because of the setting - early 1960s Brill Building? Written by someone who totally LIVED it?! Sounds fantastic! Well... to a point. All of Weil's de
... moretails about the behind-the-scenes workings of the music business was quite fascinating. And for some, that may make this book totally worth it. But her characters... ugh. Pretty flat. The main character comes from a family of lawyers, and an older brother in pre-law who acts super immature for someone of that age and education. Her parents are aggravatingly snobbish, and so one-sided I could barely stand to read anything about them. The murder mystery plot is borderline simple. I just couldn't bring myself to care all that much. The character development is hardly there, the dialogue is simplistic (or way too mature for the 16-year-old lead), and after the first half of the book describing the music business of the era, I just didn't care for the rest of the book. I think Cynthia Weil could have done better just writing a fun memoir about herself at the same time, rather than fictionalizing it and inserting weird 21st-century commentary that's anachronistic to the time. But if you're really into the history of pop music business of the mid-century, the first half might be worth your time. less
