review 1: While I am not a big fan of new adult, I read the sample on this and was hooked. Forbidden romances are like catnip to me. This had two elements - older guy/younger woman and teacher/student. Shout out to the author for recognizing that our world is multicultural! Really love when authors think outside that all white box. Lizzie is in college and is in the middle of getting it on with the boyfriend of another student when her world as she knows it ends. She's been slacking off her studies, putting her grades and scholarship in jeopardy and now has to grow up fast! One course in particular, Byzantine studies, is tough made tougher by a TA - Connor. As Lizzie's life falls apart, Connor becomes more than just a TA. The story is told well with humor and seriousness in eq... moreual parts. But even with the sense of gravitas, you never forget that Lizzie is 18 years old! Absolutely loved the banter with Lizzie's girlfriends Cait and Frankie. And Frankie's bisexuality was a welcome and unique twist on the best friend theme. Again, outside the box thinking. Great writing - funny, acerbic, spot on dialogue on the part of all secondary characters. Some nice heat - definitely not erotica, but still done nicely. Not necessarily panty melting, though. So up until about 55% this book was a solid 5 all the way but then when Connor, our male love interest, gets all wishy washy about his feelings, the book, for me, lost some of its steam. The issue with Sophie seemed odd and there seemed to be a bit of a loose end there. Lizzie and Connor's story does end nicely with what I would think is more of an HFN given that Lizzie is so young but still a nice way to end the book. I think this is the author's first new adult and her writing is great so as she writes more in this subgenre, I am sure it will improve...
review 2: This is a great read. Yes, it is a common theme of student/teacher taboo but the writing is excellent and makes it stand on its own. Connor is nerdy sexy (I'm a sucker for the nerds, especially when they don't realize their sex appeal) and Lizzies snarky and sarcastic personality is a trip. Yes there is quite an age gap when it comes to life experiences, but she is an old soul for an 18 yr old. especially with the hand she has been dealt in life. A very enjoyable read. 4.5 stars!!!!!! $ less
