review 1: I'm definitely becoming more impressed with Dan Simmons' ability to write books in various genres and to do so as well as he does.Hardcase is a modern Raymond chandler hard boiler detective story. It's got most of the standard fare for the genre: a crude protagonist, a femme fatale, a mob family led by a dying out of touch patriarch, etc. The story follows Joe Krutz as he tries to unravel the disappearance of the mob family's accountant. I found this story a lot easier to get into than Chandler's stuff, which is probably due to not having to guess what archaic word or social stigma Chandler was describing. With any luck, this book will age better than Chandler's stuff.
review 2: Dan Simmons is a versatile writer. He rarely disappoints. Hardcase was a very diffe
... morerent, simplistic effort for Simmons. It is a solid crime thriller. Gone are Simmons usual historical and literary references. Instead, the reader can enjoy a hard boiled, bad ass character. There might have been too many characters in this one though. I will most likely check out the other books in this series following Joe Kurtz. less

I don't really remember this book very well. Apparently it didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

Loved it. Bogie could have played Kurtz.
