review 1: How can you pack the literary punch of a novel into a short story? Well we will have to ask Dan Skinner, since he has mastered it with this little diamond! This story is amazing, you are transported to Sweetwater, Missouri in 1965, and you can feel the heat,and see the tiny town through the eyes of Zac, a shy, talented young man who is cloaked in loneliness. I love the detail in this story, Mr. Skinner has a way with words that is second to none. There is a line in this book that sums up everything about teenage angst if you were a shy teen, and a dreamer, as was I, "It has been said that imagination is the comfortable companion of the lonely heart". Beautifully said, and so true. Read this story, you won't be sorry, and you will be richer in imagination for it! Another ... moregem Dan Skinner, beautiful story!
review 2: Again a great read by Dan Skinner. I loved Zac. Discovering sexual feelings at the same time as discovering that they are towards a boy made him a loner. It was too dangerous to be gay back in the sixties. He finds a way to explore feelings through his comics. Reality mixes up with fantasy, finally allowing him to find a way to be himself. I loved the bathroom scene. I won't spoil it here though :) The only minus about it: it was over way too soon. I just want to roll around in Dan's words forever. :) less
