review 1: As a firm Dan Skinner fan in both photography and books. His books seem so personal he was able to translate some midwest boys stories of their experiences as being gay in the midwest perfectly. I was wary of reading this book due to the obvious religious subject matter. My Oklahoma in laws are firm homophobes. We went to an actual tent revival. I knew some of the hymns because I own the sound track from Oh Brother Where Art Thou? yeah weird. These hypocrites make my blood boil. Such hate in the name of God. I grew up in the Lutheran Church. Who's mother active on the national level who voted to allow LGBT Pastors. Several churches left their Synods because of this vote. I absolutely love the sweetness and growth of love between the young men. Mr Skinner handle... mored this touchy subject so well I loved how Caleb's father handled Caleb's homosexuality. Matt is safe on the farm and is in love and may be hopefully in charge of his life and safety. Well done Mr. Skinner well done
review 2: After having read all of Dan's other books, I pretty much knew I had to go into this one expecting the unexpected. Dan's books are each very unique and different from each other. I did, however continue to see his masterful use of words. In The Bible Boys, Dan uses his vivid descriptions and poetic language to share an intense and sensual relationship between two young men who discover love. As Matt and Caleb struggle against the hate, control and seclusion of the cult their parents are involved with, they learn the true meaning of love with each other and with that the courage to be free...To fight for what they want and what they deserve. "Love does not make cowards. It creates heroes." I loved this book! I do have to confess I have a love/hate relationship with the ending. On one hand, I really wanted more! I want to know what happens to Matt and Caleb on the next step of their journey. On the other hand...where it ended was, to me, symbolic. The book ended with the present and left the future open to the reader's inference and imagination. All-in-all, an amazing read which engages the mind, heart, emotions and imagination! less
