review 1: This book is so bright, and colorful and well….cute! The Cutie Pies cookbook is a wonderful little cookbook filled with compact and bite-size recipes, and once I had it in my hot little hands, I couldn’t wait to try some of them out.Dani Cone sells her pies in the Seattle Washington area at High 5 Pie, and she is also the founder and owner of three Fuel Coffee locations based in the Seattle area. She’s taken the baking secrets from her Grandma Molly, and turned them into a business. Her delectable pastries have even earned her a Best of Seattle award! One of my favorite parts of the book was her introduction, where she shares her story of how she became the baker of pies. Constantly in search of a pie that tasted as good those baked by her Grandma Molly, Dani soon deci... moreded the best way to come close to Grandma’s delicious pies was to try and make them herself.I’m glad she decided to add the Cutie Pie cookbook to her repertoire, because I certainly needed some of Grandma Molly’s secrets myself! I’ve been experimenting with various pie crust recipes, and Dani’s All-Butter Pie Crust is so delicious, I may just stop my search for the perfect crust! What I loved about Cutie Pies is that it offers both sweet and savory recipe ideas – - portable, perfectly sized portions are not just limited to those with a sweet tooth. There are forty recipes, and six types of “pie shapes” to choose from. Each chapter covers a pie shape, along with tips, hints, and the best crust recipe to use based on the ingredients – and we can’t forget the wonderful, mouth-watering photos throughout! The great thing about this cookbook is the versatility. For each recipe included under the specific pie shapes, you are also given the amount the recipe would make for a different pie shape – so the Cutie Pie Black Raspberry can be made into 36 Petit-5’s, 10 Flipsides , 50 Piepops or 8 Piejars. These variations are included with each recipe. It’s a great way to mix and match all the flavors and pie shapes to come up with your favorites!I was so excited when I saw the Piepops section, I knew I had to try one of those recipes also. I chose the Caramel-Pecan piepops, and they are just scrumptious! Mini pecan pies on a stick! The pie crust is so wonderfully buttery and flaky, I can’t believe I was actually the one that made it! So yes, this book is great for home bakers of all levels, even those who have never attempted a pie from scratch!Dani Cone did well sharing her grandmother’s secret to making pies, and if the one’s I’ve made taste even half as good as Grandma Molly’s do, I know why Dani searched high and low and was unsuccessful in finding something that even came close!
review 2: Dani Cone owns and operates High 5 Pie in Seattle Washington. Cutie Pies is a culmination of her work as a pie expert. Her pies come in six "varieties" - cutie pies, petit 5's, pie jars, flipsides, pie pops and full-sized pies. Cutie pies are baked in standard muffin tin. Petit 5's in mini-muffin pans. Pie jars are pies baked in half pint canning jars. Flipsides are similar to turnovers. But Pie Pops are what caused me to really want to share this book. They're little pies served on sticks like lollipops(so cute!!!!).Her recipe collection bounced from sweet to savory making this the most inclusive pie cookbook I have seen. Dani offers such a selection that not only makes me want to go home and bake but find my way across the state to Seattle just to try High 5 Pies (anyone want to send me one, my birthday is in two weeks). What I like best about Cutie Pies is that this book touches on all the pie needs one could have. The crust recipes vary from an ordinary crust to a graham cracker to a vegan to a gluten free. For those not on special diets this might not seem that important but for someone who might make a pie for someone with a gluten allergy or is vegan - it's nice to have the options. I love that I can make the gluten free crust and stuff it in a sterilized canning jar for the cutest treat out there. This book makes me wish my son was still in elementary school so I can send pie pops to a class party.I feel like I should share some recipes here but my tastes run more to the four cheese and onion pie variety. Who ever thought of a mac and cheese pie? Yum! Wait- Mac and Cheese on a stick. Hmm I've got some free time coming up this weekend so pies might be in my future. less
