review 1: I adore MeKellar's books for the simple fact that I grew up in a town (maybe a generation) that believed math and history were "for boys" and reading and writing were "for girls." Honestly, it was easy for me to believe this considering that I knew nothing about sports and yet I was expected to know how long it took Johnny to get a home run if I knew the distance to first base and the rate he was running at or what a batting average indicated (I understand these now, but elementary/ middle school me was just baffled). When I was reviewing for the GRE I panicked a little when thinking of the math in my work book, so I worked through McKeller's books (Even though they're geared towards high school/ Middle school students) just to review the basics of algebra and geometry. De... morespite the fact that I was just reviewing the material, I found that McKellar's books filled in gaps in my education I never knew I had. The writer delivers the information at a level an older middle school-er should be able to grasp, yet she never talks down to her reader. I hope that McKellar continues to write books like these because I feel that her writing style does an excellent job at making these topics engaging and easy to grasp, while empowering young readers. My only complaint is that there should be more practice problems (maybe on the books website?).Mini-rant/ disclaimer/ run-on sentence: Maybe it's a character flaw that I was able to grasp concepts when put in a more "feminine" context, but I'm positive I'm not the only person out there that feels this way.
review 2: In Hot X, Danica McKellar manages to cover in 400 pages (complete with worked out examples and practice problems) what most algebra books fail to cover well in 800. As was the case with her other two books, McKellar covers the variable, graphing, and exponent skills covered in a traditional algebra class with thorough explanations and a great sense of humor. Any algebra student would benefit from having this book as a reference (that will help them refresh skills as they tackle Geometry and Algebra 2).As for me, I learned a few new vocabulary terms that I plan on introducing my own students to, and I found that (as usual) McKellar and I tend to explain certain skills the same way, which always makes me feel better. I also plan on suggesting more of my students get a hold of this book to help them while working on homework. less
