One day Daddy said it was time to learn about Dr. King. I was seven years old and I thought he was going to tell me about a medical doctor. When he started telling me about Dr. King. I was very interested. Daddy read many books from the library to me.
My daddy played The I Have A Dream Speech on his record player. When I heard Dr. King’s voice. I was in awe. I felt like I was in the Baptist church. I didn’t understand everything that was being said. But I knew that it was important because I could hear the crowd cheering at different times.
I will never forget the first time that I found out why Dr. King was so important to the civil rights movement. I remember asking my daddy where was Dr. King now? That’s when he told me that he was assassinated. Next, my daddy told me I was important. He told me that I could be anything that I wanted to be in life. The other message that my parents always taught me was to embrace everyone.
That is one of the things that I have taught my children. That makes me a happy mother.
As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his life. We remember the message. The message of justice, equality, peaceful protests and nonviolence. He was a man of God, a father, preacher and provider. Dr. King was the symbol of courage. He was brave and endured the greatest price to pay and that was death.
How do we keep the legacy of Dr. King alive? We teach our children about Dr. King and the impact that he made on our county. We need to teach the youth of today the values and morals of Dr. King. Stress the importance of making a difference without causing a riot or confrontation.
I pray that on Monday. You take a moment and thank Dr. King for his sacrifice and for his message that we should instill in our children. I have tried my best to live by Dr. King’s example. I don’t know if I would have had the courage that Dr. King had.
