review 1: As much as I truly loved this book and the fact that it opened my eyes to so much of Shanghai's role during the 2nd World War, I felt at times (even though this is already a book of more than 400 pages) that I was hungry for more depth and more of the story that wasn't told. I found that the timeline would skip through parts of the story that I saw as could be exciting in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed Daniel Kalla's writing style just hungered for more.
review 2: This is a touching story about how World War II affected Shanghai, and how the different cultures of Chinese, Japanese, Germans, and especially the Jews lived together. The story is sad and beautiful at the same time. It is full of terror, survival, hope, and love. The story focuses on how the Jews
... more who were lucky enough to get out of Germany and Austria struggled to survive. Because the hospitals would not allow Jews... a courageous Jewish doctor and a caring Chinese girl team up to build a make-shift hospital and treat the sick Jews. Because the Japanese who invaded Shanghai sympathized with the Germans, the story focuses on the terrorism and killing of the Jews in Shanghai, and the killing of those who helped them. In the midst of this story, is a love between the Jewish doctor and the Chinese girl, just trying to stay alive and take care of each other. Although this is fiction, it taught me things I did not know about WWII. less
