For five centuries, a witch’s curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the mountain. When Cécile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she realizes that the trolls are relying on her to break the curse.
Cécile has only one thing on her mind: escape. But the trolls are clever, fast, and inhumanly strong. She will have to bide her time…
But the more time she spends with the trolls, the more she understands their plight. There is a rebellion brewing. And she just might be the one the trolls were looking for…
My ThoughtsI really liked this book. It was one of those stories that while I was reading it nothing else seemed to matter. I was transported away into the pages of the book, my own little bubble of story and magic while the world passes by around me… and then the next thing I know, it’s 5am.
Stolen Songbird slightly reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. It was subtle to the point where I didn’t start noticing the similarities at all until more than halfway in, with a little help from the Beauty and the Beast Soundtrack, but once I started noticing the similarities I couldn’t stop.
As a main character Cécile was unique to the world she was in. Red haired human in a city of trolls. She was also strong and independent, willing to help herself instead of waiting around for someone to come save her. I appreciated how much her feeling drew me into the story, her pain at being drawn away from her family was well done and I didn’t find myself thinking about her being whiny.
Tristan was….wow. So, physically hes supposed to be handsome, being compared to Prince Charming in looks from moment one, but that’s not what got me. His personality was so deep. He was funny, charming and just the right amount of rude to convince me that he was not impressed by the arranged marriage to Cécile.
I liked the fact that the romance in this book wasn’t a straight away sort of thing, and did not overwhelm the plot. It built up from what started as hatred and turned into a love that could not be broken. Cécile and Tristan still seemed to fall in love to fast, but they also had the mind bond to contend with. It might be very difficult to not like someone that your constantly connected with.
I would give this book a 4/5 as the writing was well done and the story well thought out. It wasn’t perfect as there were some moments where the story lost me for a moment before pulling me back in, but as those were near the beginning I’m willing to forgive them. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels as this one was a good mix of action, adventure, mystery and romance.
