review 1: it took me a really long time to get through this book. It wasn't that I didn't like it, just that after the introduction of the characters there was a huge gap. I spent half the book feeling like I MUST have skipped a chapter or two, and had no clue why anyone was doing what they were doing or how they got to that point. The ending wasn't brilliant or anything, just ok, but it did smoothly wrap up the story and made a lot more sense than the vast majority of the book. The writing style was shallow, but not hugely flawed, and the story did progress at a decent pace.
review 2: I gave this book 3 stars because there wasn't anything that I hated about it, but I didn't love it. Since there were five main characters, I didn't really empathize with any of them. At th
... moree beginning I had hard time deciding if any of them were worthy of my sympathy, and by the time I came to kind of care what happened to some of the characters, the book was at least halfway over.I will say that Madame Vileroy was probably the best character in the book because I knew where she stood as the bad guy and everything she did was in character for the way that she was portrayed. As for the five kids, I feel like the authors tried so hard to make them different from one another without giving them real personalities. Basically, I didn't finish this book with a good sense of who they really were. Their special gifts pretty much came to be everything that made up their personalities. And to an extent I think that was intentional, but it also had the effect of making these kids very superficial. Or perhaps stereotypical would be a better way of saying it. Not to give away any spoilers, but only a few of the kids ever moved outside of the stereotype they were placed in by their gift.Overall, I don't have any big complaints about this book, but I don't have any great praises for it either. I will say that there were some things in the book that surprised me, and that was nice, but I won't give away any spoilers. The way the book ended was in shape with the story as a whole, even though it was far from the fairytale ‘everything is better now’ kind of ending that I half expected. But the final fight scene in Madame Vileroy’s bedroom felt very rushed. There were a lot of things that were left unexplained or half explained. And I feel like some of that was intentional to keep the mystery surrounding Madame Vileroy intact since I hear she appears in at least one of the other books, but some of it just felt like sloppy writing. Like the authors weren't sure how to accurately portray what was happening, so they just didn't put it in. less

Five stars because of the end. It all came together beautifully. This one's going on my shelf.

I couldn't really get into it. It bored me. Stuck with it for 150 pages then gave up. :(

Couldn't finish at all. Made it through to about 20 percent of the book....
