review 1: The story revolves around a hedonistic northern Mexican agronomist in the mid-1940s. The other characters in Sada's book are none too sympathetic either. The manipulative prostitute, a vindictive potential mother-in-law, thieves, and scheming mothers and aunts. Sada's sarcasm and humor are on full display. The book is almost all narrative, with little dialog. There is a density to the prose that slows down the pace and can obscure the fun.
review 2: Reading Sada's prose is like eavesdropping on someone's train of thought. His style of writing is unique and masterfully executed. Brimming with humor, (I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions), we follow Demetrio as he bumbles his way through a series of poor choices and missteps while struggling to
... moreally his lascivious nature with a path worthy of respectable society. Almost Never is currently Sada's only work translated into English, a real shame, as I would love to read more from him. less

I'm not sure if it's what's lost in translation but I found this book stupendously boring.
