review 1: So this is a brilliant book, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It's directed at business, entrepreneurs, career, etc, but you can take the ideas and apply them to your life in general, even if you're a stay at home mom (ahem). For some reason I was expecting it to be a tight process you go through where you come out at the end with some direction and guidance - more like a business plan. What this actually is, is a series of essays and brainstorming sessions. Each one gives you insight and direction, but it's kind of loose. You could do each one separately with no connection to the others - not so much a structured guide as a loose grouping of brainstorming sessions. Thus, the Firestarter Sessions. Oh. Now I get it. I started out listening to it on Audiobook from the lib... morerary. And yes, it's brilliant stuff - inspiring to figure out what your passion is and let it shape your life. But it was overwhelming for me - just the sheer amount to process and apply. This is not a "library" kind of book - meaning the kind of book you check out for two weeks, read, and then return, having come out at the end with some neat little lessons to apply. It's the kind of book you need to own and go through slowly, highlighting, scribbling notes and applying and processing it a little bit at a time over weeks and months and years. Danielle LaPorte has her own inspirational inimitable style, that is rich and enjoyable, but also gets a bit thick to wade through at times. She's definitely an idealist - "get out there and life a life you love already" - and her idealism is inspiring (can I just quit saying that word already?). This book can give you a kick in the butt to change your life.If you need some fresh inspiration or perspective on life or business or making your business pleasure, it's worth checking out.
review 2: I just re-read several sections of FSS. The first time around I was so in awe of the presentation of the information that I felt I needed to review to be sure that I actually read what I read. Danielle Laporte is amazing! She gets to the nitty-gritty of things with humour as well as a no-holds-barred approach that I found refreshing. I love that she dares her readers to be bold and unconventional and even unreasonable! If you want sound advice and a license to be authentic and original, then FSS is the book you need. less
