review 1: I find Danielle Steel's books more appealing when she sets her stories in the past, in this case World War II. This novel had an interesting plot, until her protagonist, a man in his 40s, fall in love with a woman half his age (just wasn't very believable to me). The ending also seemed too neat and tidy, as she condensed more than 60 years into just 20 pages. But I continue to ask this question each time I read a book by this author - was it edited before publication? Lots of odd and awkward sentence structures (2 consecutive sentences beginning with 'and' in many paragraphs) and the same thoughts are repeated over and over again. Yet I continue to read her novels .... :)
review 2: Slightly better than an average DS book. This novel follows two German famil
... moreies linked by a pair of Lipannzer horses. Alex gives the horses to Nick as his slightly Jewish family is forced to flee Germany at the onset of WWII. Nick and his sons join the circus and start a new life while Alex is sad about the loss of his friend. Both men, as well as Nick's father and Alex's daughter are bereft at the circumstances Hitler forces, but most try to forget ahead. Marianne heads to England where she is safe with friends of her father and Alex tries to keep things together in Germany. The story largely focus on the five or six years after they leave, but then fast forwards 20 years and then another 20 years for a nice resolution. less
