review 1: This book promised a lot and didn't deliver. The characters got old fast. No one's motives were ever explained, and the supporting lead character left unlikable at the end, while I had the distinct feeling the author was not going for that particular emotion. There was nothing redemptive at the end of this book, either. None of the characters ended in any sort of good or progressive place, unless you count "sex without emotion" as progress. I don't.
review 2: I read another review in which the critic said reading this book was like reading someone's diary, and after finishing the novel, I pretty much agree. I believe the author is capable of good writing, as she does have some passages that are great, and her descriptions of Nepal and Nepalese people are often
... morewonderfully detailed. However, the plot and events in this book are just terrible. By focusing solely on Alex's shallow relationships with Maya and Will, and casually glossing over what happens over the course of EIGHT years in the rest of her life, the book feels empty and lacks depth. Also, the obsession with their sexual relationships vs. other aspects of the characters reinforces the lack of depth. I would not recommend this book. less

I thought this book read more like a travel essay than a literary novel.
