review 1: I agree with a few of the main points that are the foundation of what Dave does. I agree that great teachers make it look easy, because they work hard, not because it IS easy. I also agree that building rapport, getting to know your students, creating a safe environment and being passionate are all very important to successes in the classroom. However, I don't agree that teachers are entertainers. We do want our lessons to be engaging, because they are thought-provoking and relevant, not because we use gimmicks in the delivery. I'm sure Dave is a great teacher, but I don't think his way works for most. It's authentic for him, which is why it is effective for him. I'm afraid most who follow in his footsteps would look phony and silly.
review 2: 'Teach Like a Pir
... moreate' should be required reading for all university students, teachers, principals! I constantly seek out people who get excited about education the way I do, that's why I love Twitter, I am able to immerse myself in conversations about quality teaching and exciting practices. It is so great to read the pages of this book and see Dave's enthusiasm for great teaching leap right off the page.Four 'keepers':Passion can come in three categories: Content, Professional & Personal. Being able to identify, focus, develop and use each of these passions can enable you to be 'powerfully passionate' teacher.Immersion- this was a good one for me. Sometimes I feel like I have so many things going on in my head that I don't know which one to focus on. I will admit it, I often can be doing something and talking to someone but thinking about something completely different, I know it is not good and it has been pointed out to me on occasions. Teachers need to be truly present, and students can sense it when they are. Stop thinking about everything else and be in the moment. The importance if asking the right questions, and the importance of asking myself more questions.Creativity doesn't always come easy- you need to work at it and continually immerse yourself in the creative process. less
