review 1: So far this book is pretty good. Im barely in the beginning but its still pretty good. Its describing each one of the characters and their background in the high school. Its also describing every little thing that is happening in the school, like events, dances and all that stuff. i like it because even though it describes a lot of stuff, it flows everything very good. Its not boring at all. So far, i like this book. i like it too because it talks about the characters background life, what happens in their life.
review 2: Fascinating. Cullen's portrayal of the boy killers is so black and white though--Eric is the psychopath (villain), Dylan is the depressed moping teenager who didn't really want to kill anyone (more a victim than villain) that I am skeptical of
... more how biased his account really is. I watched a documentary on Columbine shortly after reading this book, and some of the portrayals in the book don't sync up to those of friends interviewed for the documentary. For example, Cullen's book makes it a point to argue that the boys were not motivated by being bullied, emphasizing that Eric was, in fact, a charmer who always had "Girls. Lots of girls." One of their friends, however, said that this was not the case. That they WERE outcasts, the lowest of the low, and this WAS their primary motivation for the massacre. I wonder if Cullen sometimes loses objectivity in his attempt to shape his own narrative (an anti-narrative, dispelling long-held misconceptions of the tragedy), or if friends' and witnesses' accounts have morphed into the popular media narrative, which would probably be Cullen's argument for the discrepancy. Either way, the book provides fascinating psychological insight into all those touched by the tragedy (especially the two who instigated it). less
