review 1: The SavageThis was really a beautiful little book; it’s so short but filled to the brim with emotion and incredibly imagery. This graphic novel is told from the point of view of ‘Blue’. He tells the reader about the short story he wrote (spoiler alert, the story was ‘The Savage’) to deal with the difficult emotions he experienced after his father died.It deals with loss, memory, family, story telling and bullying all within, like, 70 pages. Everything came out so strongly, yet subtly, through his story and the story of ‘The Savage’The artwork was stunning and the plot was so well woven together I was almost shocked. This is a charming and very aesthetically pleasing tale. It was lovely to spend an hour going through. I’m glad it was the first book I read in ... more2014.
review 2: David Almond and Dave McKean are a match made in heaven. The emotionally raw story is matched with raw illustrations that enhance and even tell the story at some points. That being said, I might have to get the British version at some point, because I'm rather annoyed by how the American edition rather pointlessly substitutes the censored swear word "da**" (damn) for the censored swear word "b*****" (bloody). This leads to some rather weird phrasing, in my opinion, because in normal speech, the two words are not completely interchangeable. less
