review 1: A wonderful and magical read. David Almond has not let me down yet, his books are aimed at young adults but they are too good to be missed by anyone who appreciates good writing. David finds so much magic in the world we all live in, his characters are credible and yet sometimes it is as if they live in a world of their own, ethereal and yet you can touch them, children and adults characters alike. I also love how David celebrates his homeland of Northumberland in his work.
review 2: Read as part of the Carnegie Longlist in 2010. 14+ due to violence and you tube violence in the middle section (even though it is staged). Basic story about 3 boys Liam/Max who find a baby and Natrass the ‘mean kid’ in a village. (Crystal and Oliver/Henry are the foster kids
... more). But much more - a complex/abstract exploration of war/violence, human capacity for violence/horror/ imagination. Illustrates dehumanisation through the internet and media. Explores truth, stories, lies & news. Easily an A level text. Very sophisticated, clever but disturbing. Young adult readers should read the resolution not stop in the middle. less
