review 1: I enjoyed this, but definitely nothing earth-shattering as far as the insights contained. Brooks is certainly a great writer and storyteller and the narrative framework of using a fictional couple to represent and reflect the various phenomena worked surprisingly well.Overall it felt like it was citing a wide variety of authoritative academic sources, the names Jonah Lehrer and Malcolm Gladwell were dropped enough times that I am a little concerned as to the overall quality of the research.
review 2: I heard David Brooks on a NPR broadcast and thus searched out this book. In The Social Animal he creates two characters which are used to illustrate the workings of the conscious and subconscious mind as they grew throughout their lives. The insights he provides
... more were thoughtful and stimulated further reflection on my part. I know early on I was thinking that high school age children could benefit, even 7th and 8th graders if it would stimulate understanding on what lay ahead of them. Anyway, liked it.I thoroughly enjoyed those portions of the book which focused on these characters. Other parts of the book dragged (for me) on the detail behind what he was trying to get across. I really did not care about the research, although if given more time, etc. I am sure it was valuable and interesting to the right audience. My rating is based on the parts I enjoyed. less

Better than Lehrer, neck in neck with How Pleasure Works by Sax
