review 1: Finally a book on energy infrastructure and sustainability that strips out all the conjecture and unreferenced 'facts'. It's a shame that the importance of this issue is generally obscured by money, politics, ethics and guess work.By taking the information available and simplifying the mathematics David MacKay covers a vast amount of ground and tries hard to pull it all together. This final piece of the jigsaw (pulling it together) is sadly the only criticism I have of this book; an impossible problem with solutions only hinted at. Leaving the reader to come to their own conclusion that we've got a huge problem. Which most of us know wherever we sit on the fence. However, the brilliance of this book is that it shows exactly how big the problem is. It's shown in a way t... morehat can be as complex as you like by giving the data and the easy sums or pointing the reader to the appendix for more detail.Everyone interested, concerned or working in this area should have this book. As a starting point the arguments here stand clear: We're in for some big changes one way or another.
review 2: This is an essential book for anyone interested in getting energy without carbon emissions. I have linked to the free online version on my blog. The most important contribution is: McKay explains how renewable energy at scale needs a lot of space. That is of interest when discussing energy from the desert. Part of the usefulness of the Desertec project comes from the fact that it is difficult to find the necessary area in heavily populated industrial countries at cheap cost. less

Great reference book that reads somewhere in the middle of a textbook and an op ed.

No-nonsense about alternative energy, what's feasible and what's not.
