review 1: David Johnson has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I read An Unexpected Frost over the course of two days. It is amazing how much I actually care for these characters. The only reason I am not sad the book ended is because I know there is another book for me to read. In An Unexpected Frost Tucker, April, March, August, April and Ms. Ella are all trying to recover from the loss of the childrens mother and Tuckers daughter Maisie. Though there are horrible betryals, losses, and revelations... in the end this series is about family and healing. Tucker and her family, whether it is blood or chosen family, may have very little in the way of material items. That's an understatment, they are below the poverty line but in rich is many ways. Unexpected Frost made me think... more, made me cry, and at times made me cringe. It takes great writing to make a person feel and love charachters. David Johnson, in my eyes is one of the best.
review 2: I got tired of all of the terrible things that were happening--rape, murder, prostitution, cancer, beatings, racism, poverty, a child running away, etc. It was just too depressing for me to really like it. The first two were pretty good books, but I didn't finish this one. As with the second book, it also had proofreading problems. For example, Carter is August's father, but in one place it said he was his grandfather. It had typos and wrong word problems, too. less
