review 1: A good read but not as good as the first novel. David Levien is a very talented writer and I enjoy reading his work.In the first book Behr was getting over the death of his son, while helping another family find their missing son. It was a tale of redemption, and you will overlook personal faults in that setting. In the second book all that is gone, and Behr to often comes off looking like a jerk, and someone you wish would have done to him as he does to others.Still a really good book.
review 2: Frank Behr arrives at his friend, Aurelio's martial arts studio and finds he's been murdered. Since Aurelio is so good in martial arts, by the look of things, it must have taken at least three men to overcome Aurelio.Frank sets out to find his friend's killers. As he b
... moreegins searching, he's asked to look into the disappearance of two private investigators from one of the prestige agencies in Indianapolis. At first, he declines but then his old boss, Capt. Pomeroy, gets him to reconsider with the possibility of getting back on the police force if he succeeds. He learns about "pea-skake" houses where gambling takes place in low rent, condemned buildings in the city. Someone has been attempting to take over this action by killing or beating the people who would be their competitors. As tension mounts, we follow Terry Schlegal and this three sons, together with an ex-con named Knute, as they begin executing their plan to take over all of the pea-shake houses; according to Financial Gary, this could be worth tens of millions of dollars. The novel moves with breakneck speed with plenty of action and violence. The author writes an excellent thriller and captures the reader's attention, not letting go until the last page.I enjoyed the story and the protagonist, Frank Behr, a mixture of strength, bravery and integrity with just the right amount of tenderness. The Schlegel family rivals the Charles Mansion family in their violence and combined immorality. They are well described. less
