review 1: I was looking for something in Christmas non-fiction and discovered this interesting book which tells the story of Christmas Eve 1941. The Japanese have just bombed Pearl Harbor forcing Americans into WWII. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill comes to Washington D.C. under a cloak of secrecy to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The two men attend church services together. They address the nation - what can they say to people who are facing an uncertain future? Their sons, brother and husbands are answering the call to defend their country. How can they think about celebrating right now? Each speech is unique. Remember that the British people were involved in the war some time before us. Even today their words are inspiring.
review 2: The book esse
... morentially says "You are always home at Christmas, even if you're not." McCullough conveys this through a few stories but doesn't supply the connection or much thought beyond that these things occurred. I guess I'm supposed to because it's Churchill and because it's Christmas be moved. It was too thin a volume and too sparse (another reviewer breaks it down with exactly how much time is devoted to each topic). I feel this could have been so much more interesting a story than what was eventually delivered (I suspect this may have to do with the form this was originally presented in - but could have been expanded in print). less
