review 1: Rather than being great reading material, this little booklet is more of an excellent tool to equip anyone (ANYONE) for discipling others through Bible study. What I love is that the formulas are so simple and accessible that anyone who can read can apply them successfully. This book could be broken down into three parts: first, how to go about considering who to do a one-to-one study with, and practical ideas on what a study together could look like. Then the different formulas are explained (the Swedish Method and the COMA method - essentially, specific questions to be applied to Bible reading). The book wraps up with helpful questions that we can ask when studying specific types/genres of Biblical literature.For many of us, initiating and leading a Bible study can se... moreem intimidating because we just don't feel equipped. The tools presented in 1-2-1 Bible Reading give ample encouragement to anyone who might be feeling inadequate to study the Bible with others. Of course, it's great for personal study as well. I'm excited to actually try it out, and also share it with others.
review 2: Helm suggests that rather than looking for a big event to help our non-Christian friends meet Christ, or a class to help our new Christian friends put down roots, or a special-interest group to help our long-time believing friends grow & mature, we look no further than the simple concept of reading God's Word with one other person. He gives reasons why the Word is powerful. He role-plays how to ask a friend and how to have your first meeting. He includes two appendices of questions (that you can copy): 8-weeks' worth of questions to go with a sampling of passages in Markand lists of COMA (Context, Observation, Meaning, Application) questions specifically for various types of literature in the Bible. Any believer should be able to take these ideas and handouts and read God's Word with anyone interested (no matter where they are on the spectrum of belief & maturity). less
