review 1: I read this one in a couple of days, thinking at the start I would hate it as it's not normally the kind of book I would buy but hubbie picked it up at the airport some time ago and its been waiting to be read. What a joy the Christmas holidays are for catching up on reading! The book is very funny in parts, especially chapters seen through the eyes of housekeeper Tia. Silvia is in a coma after a fall off a balcony and each chapter is 'narrated' by a different friend, family member or her nurse. Through each of them, Silvia's backround is uncovered and skeletons appear from the cupboard. I won't spoil the ending, you'll have to uncover that yourself but it is a book with laughter and a lot of sadness in parts. Definately worth a read.
review 2: It is a well wri
... moretten and interesting book. Although I didn't find a single element of it funny despite all the reviews saying it's hilarious. The dual narration worked well which was wonderful, I have never seen it be pulled off by a single author quite so well.Almost everything you believed to be true is proved wrong by the end of the book.A couple of the characters drove me crazy and Winnies narration was actually painful to read, despite her being a very interesting character.I feel as though the ending was a little rushed and not particularly well thought out, as is the case with many books. I enjoyed reading it, although I don't think I will be reading it again. less

I'm not a massive Dawn French fan so this probably wasn't the best book for me to read. I really liked the premise of this book but the writing and some of the characters were so irritating. The chapters from the viewpoint of the family were fairly enjoyable to read but the cleaning lady and nurse characters were so stereotypical that it bordered on offensive. At least it was an easy read so got through it quickly - this is basically the best I can say about this book.

I dipped in and out of this book, but finished it a few months ago now. After reading two of Dawn French's books now, Im surprised that for a comedian, she writes books with such dark plots! Silvia is a seriously misunderstood woman, an accomplice in a murder, she ends up shutting out her family, to protect them from her mentally unstable, cocaine addicted, murdering girlfriend. In the end, she pays for it with her life.
