review 1: I have always been a fan of Ms French and think her ability to write comedy scripts and sketches is second to none, however as a novelist I found this book – to play with its title - A Tiny bit Tedious. The narrative is stilted and the characters one dimensional and truth be told very little happens through most of the book. The idea of each of the three main characters commenting on the daily events they are entangled in became monotonous and far too repetitive.Sadly I just didn’t like this book at all, and believe had this been submitted to an agent or publisher by an unknown then it would never have reached the shelves of many bookshops, It just goes to show celebrities can get published despite the quality of the work between the covers, as the publishers are thinki... moreng with their wallets.
review 2: Enjoyable, funny, relatable read. The Battles are a fun family to read about and I especially enjoyed the chapters from Oscar's point of view. I feel the description doesn't completely cover the book; I expected the 'unusually wild and selfish' thing Mo is going to do to be unusual as in original, but it's not really. It also doesn't happen until quite late in the book and even though the backflap makes it seem as though the story will revolve around it, that's really not the case. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the family life of the Battles is fun enough to read about as it is, but I did have to adjust my expectations whilst reading. Also be prepared for the writing style in Dora's chapters. I feel like Dawn French maybe tried a bit too hard to channel a teenager and it's astonishing how any 'likes' she managed to put into them. My reading experience was about a 3.5 stars, but the writing style, even though I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would, made the rating more of a 3 than a 4 stars. less
