review 1: Clever quasi-followup to "City of Jasmine" (some of the characters are carried over, but you can enjoy the book without having read CoJ). Raybourn writes fun historical novels with spunky women. In this one, a young woman flees her wedding (not to be thought of in the 20s) and starts searching for somewhere to hide out. A series of events lead her to Damascus and set her on a path she never anticipated. I loved the way this book tied in to all the Lady Julia Grey novels, and laughed out loud when I figured out who one of the characters "really" was. Quick fun read.
review 2: "Raybourn’s talent for incorporating drama, danger and romance into novels with diverse backdrops is what keeps her fans coming back. This time, the colorful setting and dark secrets
... more only add to her engaging characters — a great cast of secondary characters awaits their stories — and their escapades hold reader captive from the Graduate-like beginning through the Indiana Jones-style adventures and to the exciting climax" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars). less
