review 1: I loved the development of Brisbane and Julia into married life. I was thrilled with the growing love between them and 10 pages from the end the entire series is ruined for me. I get that Julia likes the excitement of working the cases but it is completely ridiculous to me that she doesn't understand the danger in what she is doing. It amounts to her dismissing what Brisbane does as trivial and so simple even a sheltered lady in waiting can do it. But what really upset me about the conclusion to this book was that she knew or at least suspected her condition and she still went traipsing after a murderer. It made me dislike the character of Julia so much that I will not be reading any more of the series. I truly regret that I pre-ordered the next novella. Horrible ... moreending IMO
review 2: Love, love, loved this installment in the Lady Julia series. We got to go to seances. There are spies. There's a Siamese cat. Gypsies. And Bellmont's been a naughty, naughty boy. The best part about this series is how Raybourn manages to keep Brisbane and Julia's marriage constantly evolving. This novel is living proof that getting a couple together doesn't mean the romance has to die. Normally I don't write reviews that contain spoilers, but I have to because a part of this novel affected me so deeply. All the feels, as the young people say today. At the very end, Julia miscarries and is told she won't be able to have children. Wow. What a brave thing for Raybourn to do. On the one hand, we readers know that Lady Julia really shouldn't be doing private investigations while pregnant. I mean, this is book 5. Dangerous things are always happening. On the other, both she and Brisbane are so damaged by the past, there was definitely a part of me that wanted that sort of domestic bliss for them. Just a brave choice all around, and a bittersweet sort of ending because Brisbane's love for Julia is so deep.I just love this series and want to marry it: adventure, mystery, romance, a delightful wry British humor. What more could you want? less
