review 1: OOooOOooooOOoooh, TALK ABOUT SALACIOUS, GOTHIC FUN. There's a hulking, handsome count who might possibly be a strigoi (aka: a VAMPIIIIIIIIRE), macabre ceremonies in ancient family crypts, a decaying castle in Transylvania, tales of villagers becoming werewolves on a full moon, murder, madness, SEDUCTION, and an authoress narrator capable of facing any moonlit forest -- everything a gal could want, really. Deanna Raybourn is officially my new fave not-at-all-guilty pleasure.
review 2: Theodora Lestrange is a young woman uninterested in marriage and family who wants to earn her own living as a writer (relatively daring in 1858). After her grandfather's death, she is looking for adventure and passion, and takes herself off to visit an old friend in Transylvania i
... moren her first attempt to find them. In a land that is still tied to feudal ideas, Theodora's friend Cosmina lives in a castle on a hill that is the seat of the Dragelescu family. The current Count Dragelescu is everything one expects in a bad boy love interest; he is forthcoming about his Don Juan ways and disinterested in anything that does not give him immediate pleasure. Yet somehow, Theodora is still inexplicably captivated by his presence. A mysterious death occurs and the castle is fogged with intrigue, as the atmosphere and the local belief that strogoi are active among the countryside cause Theodora to begin to question her own faith in logical explanations. The love story itself was not up to Deanna's normal standards-it progressed too quickly and without enough moments of tension where the reader can begin to see the pull that the protagonist is experiencing toward the love interest. Instead, I was left feeling agitated with Theodora for being taken in by his machinations. A bit frustrating, but overall a quick, mindless escape, which was exactly what I was looking for. less

Original whilst keeping to the true folklore of the region. A little disappointed in the end.

If like a little mystery with mixed supernatural this book was good.

I enjoyed this take on a historical fiction vampire story.
