review 1: This book was pretty good but not really amazing. I'd say my main problem with it was the changing of POVs and a little bit of repetitiveness. I really didn't like how one of the POVs were that of the bad guy because it kinda took away from the suspense and plot of the story. It also got a little boring halfway through because the reader knew everything before it happened due to the changing of POVs. 3.5
review 2: I read this via Audio, by Stephanie Bentley. Disclaimer: I know this author--but she did not ask me to review this book. Story rates 4 stars.Audio Rates 2.5 to 3 stars.Brief overview of book: Shelley Connors is a mermaid and comes face to face with a serial killer dumping a body. She wants the man to come to justice, but can't reveal her secret. By da
... morey she is water therapist and one of her clients is the brother of Tillman Algiers, the local sheriff. She concocts a plan with her cousins to implicate the serial killer but keep them out of the limelight. She doesn't expect how hard she will fall for the Sheriff.Tillman is a good guy--he's back doing a job his father occupied and never expected he would take. Now he's facing a murder investigation and even though he's attracted to Shelley, he can't help being suspicious of her. Together they strive to bring a killer to justice, but the lies and secrets of both their families may be the biggest catalyst of driving them apart. First why I liked the story: Tillman is to me a basic nice person, trying to do the right thing and Shelley is straddling two worlds. She has great compassion and I find it complements their relationship as they struggle to find a killer. He's not the usual anti-hero (which I like) but I like a really good stand up guy. Shelley, is kind, determined and refused to take the easy way out when it comes to finding justice--this to me makes a good story. I Loved the world building of the mermaids--and the mythos Debbie Herbert creates. The bad guy you feel sorry for, his past is indeed tragic, but you can't feel sorry for someone who does such horrible things. Because of this I give the story a four star! (plus the nice little twist in the end)What I didn't like: Purely subjective: I didn't like that the heroine would do very foolish things to try and frame the guy so suspicions would fall on him. But, it didn't stop me from continuing.AUDIO: What I liked:The narrator, Stephanie Bentley has a clear voice, bright and perfect for the young woman Shelley Connors. She has great potential and I hope to hear more from her...later on.AUDIO: What I didn't Like:The Narration was stilted and flat, the pacing was off. The Male voices held little expression. There was no accents. This story was set in the south--right on the coast and there wasn't anything to tell them different which was disappointing. Worse, every time the narrator took a deep breath to continue the listener heard it and this was terribly distracting. NOW, that I said this--realize this is NOT a personal attack, but my perception. I see great promise in this Narrator and hopes she works more on this craft because she could've made the story sing. I regret I had to give a low score to the narration-because I love audio. Otherwise, a nice read! less
