review 1: This is a very interesting book, nicely written and with a fast pace. The only reason I gave it four stars it because, at times, that pace is interrupted and goes slowly as hell. Maybe because it wasn't much of my interest, but I would've summarised more the part about slavery and cut short some of the business details. The religious part, however, some thought it was too long or detailed (based on some reviews here), but I think it's what adds so much emotion and humanity into the book and into food history. Highly recommended.
review 2: After nearly two months of studying this book, I'm pleased I've finally finished it. It's taken this long because I'm using it as research for my dissertation and I found the whole thing fascinating. I even came close to cryin
... moreg several times. It is a brilliant book well worth reading if you have an interest in the history behind British industries or chocolate. I certainly learnt a lot and I was surprised by the depth of the history presented in the book. less

A good book, but I felt it went flat at the end. Or, given the topic, stale.

History of the Quaker tradition in English chocolate manufacturing.

Rambling narrative, not a well focused history.
