review 1: A shocking novel about an inconceivable event in the lives of a mother and her children. Elizabeth experiences unexplained fainting spells and the eventual recovery of difficult memories from her childhood. The loss of her best friend in first grade, the cover-up of the information by trusted adults, the unraveling of her marriage to a work-obsessed husband with S & M tendencies, the demands of mothering two young girls, the requirement that she put her own career on the back burner and other women in her life making judgments and offering clouded advice. Mothers are measured by a different set of standards than fathers are. It can be so fragile and delicate to raise children. I found this novel to be complicated and lovingly written while also provocative, daring and ... moreinsightful. It is not an easy book to read for a mother of four children but I am glad I stuck with it.
review 2: This was an interesting book that made me write down some of my own questions about my life and how i am living it, and what should I be doing to confront old and present demons. I think as long as you don't, those demons will continue to present themselves in negative ways in your life. The main character certainly had those things, and her examination into her childhood friend's death triggered those memories. Sad book, but an entertaining and useful one. less

Liked it but couldn't believe a six year old could remember all she supposedly did.
