review 1: I loved THE QUIET BOOK, and I enjoyed this one, too. I think the art here is spectacular. The expressions on the animals' faces--especially the candy-wrapper one and the lunch tray one, are fabulous and often hysterically funny. Because the characters are making loud noises in this book, the action is great, very dynamic. The belly flop page is one of my favorites! And there's a nice mix of activities, just as in QUIET. What doesn't work quite as well for me here is that with QUIET, you could sit there by yourself reading and *be* each character, experience that quiet, imagine what it would feel like and what was about to happen or what just happened. And because you're reading it in a quiet setting, you could almost act out the entire book, which is really fun! With this ... morebook, since it's loud, it's harder for me to get as closely connected to it. Especially reading it in a quiet setting. So, the concept itself just doesn't translate quite as wonderful for me to a picture book. The list feels a bit remote. I can read it and enjoy the art, but I'm not living it--which was the great appeal to me of QUIET. Also, the ending here doesn't come to as neat of a closure as it did in QUIET. I'm mixing a 5 on art and a 3 on text to get 4 stars for LOUD.
review 2: Here's a good read-aloud, a story-time pick (although it's small and would require children to sit up close to appreciate the pictures fully).Cute animals, rendered in sweet illustrations that make their fur look really soft and fuzzy, are exposed to and make all kinds of loud noises: burps and slurps, good and bad crashes. Some of the situations may be a bit difficult for younger readers to understand: what, for instance, is "deafening silence loud"? The illustrations provide good context, though, and a little discussion between child and adult reader should make it all clear. Kids will have fun making the noises portrayed on each page. Especially the burp, I bet. less

I love all the different kinds of loud, and the illustrations are perfect and silly.

Another imaginative and beautifully illustrated book about different types of loud.

Love all the examples of loud noises. Not all are what you would usually think of.
