review 1: Recommended by Robin McKinley and endorsed by Gregory Maguire on the cover, and I needed those encouragements in the first section of the book. The scene was being set, but I wasn't really getting into it, and there were a few typos. I'm not sure why typos bother me so much, but it is quite off-putting. However, when the action picks up, this was a nice bildungsroman set in antebellum Louisiana. There was a slow part, but the engaging descriptions of a slave life in Louisiana and the interesting character relations carried me through easily.

I have read of the extent of her research, and enjoyed learning more about the time period and lifestyles covered in this book. less
