review 1: a warning for those quickly looking through reviews to decide whether to read this book- it's triggering for a variety of mental disorders- depression, addiction, EDs- and nowhere on the cover, in the blurb or in the intro does it mention this. i'm seeing many positive reviews for this book, and it can't be disputed that it's written well. however, this is essentially not a novel, but a spiteful, angry diatribe against the author's deceased mother, who (as told by the author herself) has previously expressed anger and sadness about de vigan writing about her mental illness. in de vigan's previous book her mother only featured in a few pages- however this time the entire book devoted to exposing all her mother's secrets and weaknesses in a particularly ugly way. this is not... morehing more than an excuse to vent all of her feelings towards her mother with no possible consequence. mental illness is not a choice, and the deliberate avoidance of the idea that lucile wasn't just out to hurt everyone her entire life on purpose is disrespectful to both her memory and people suffering with m.i. the author's own experience with ana should have taught her this already. i don't at all understand why this needed to be published- call me old fashioned, but airing the dirty laundry of your entire family in such a public fashion seems extremely distasteful, especially considering that the target of most of it is dead. i wonder how de vigan would feel if one of her children wrote a book exposing her like this? i feel incredibly sorry for lucile for both the mental illness she had to suffer through, and having a daughter who detested her SO much she could publish such vindictive, spiteful material. my mother and i barely speak but i would never dream of writing anything like this about her, let alone doing it after her death. that this was ever published is bad enough- that people are reviewing it as a "touching tribute" to lucile is worse.
About 2013 less
