review 1: This book could have been a lot of things, but it ended up just being a plate unseasoned chicken. As far as the concept goes, I liked it. I liked the characters and I liked the settings. I liked the way the situations played out. I liked more or less every individual piece of this book, but when they all came together they left a lot to be desired. The biggest sticking point for me was the annoying lack of detail at some parts. The bones of this novel aren't hard to follow-- a down and out gambler shoots a debtor coming to collect, and meets a woman who has the potential to grab 2.3 million dollars of embezzled money, switching his focus from hiding to seeking, falling a bit for the woman along the way. It's nothing revolutionary, but I found myself rereading in this book ... moremore than I have in a long time. Not because I found something particularly fascinating, but because a lot of the most important situations were weirdly unclear.Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's a short, interesting, engaging romp that I'd recommend to anyone in the mood for a quick mystery.Oh. But the ending sucks. Ass.
review 2: While I may think Gene Wilder should get an award and parade each year on the anniversary of the theatrical release of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I do not think Denis Johnson should get an award for every book he writes just because he wrote JESUS' SON.This book was fine, but it was also every violent 90s indie flick you've already seen, and definitely not as good as stuff like RESERVOIR DOGS, anyway, so just watch a movie instead, maybe. Or not. It was OK. Beats me. less
