As a fellow San Martian, I am always looking for new fun things to do or see. This is why I was instantly drawn to the illuminated lights that spelled out “The Spot” as I left the big HEB parking lot. Turning over to my friend, I quickly asked her what the new place was. She responded with, “Oh the Spot? It’s a new movie place. You can eat there and stuff. It’s kind of like the Alamo Drafthouse.” I had always been a huge fan of movie houses and eateries, so I made it my mission to visit The Spot as soon as possible.
The Spot has a variety of different activities to do that include bowling, playing arcade games, and grabbing a drink at the bar. Photo by Brittney Hemmands.Once I entered the cinema with a movie in mind, friendly ticket sellers that were standing at an all black desk greeted me. I stood and took in the scenery, which was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The atmosphere was quite relaxed and laidback with a dark colored theme, and to left of me was an up to date bar, an arcade, and a bowling area. Weirdly enough, what shocked me was not the array of activities available; it was my ticket seller telling me the total of my ticket with my college ID. On a Friday night, my ticket was only $7! They even have specific discount days when the tickets are only $5, and on regular days, the adult tickets are still only $10. I was given my seat number and told to walk to right to find my theater.
Outside the theater may have impressed me, but it was the inside of the theater that really made me fall in love. Once I sat down in a comfy sofa-like seat, I found that I could recline the chair as far as I wanted and could move my eatery tray so it could be in or out of the way. It was entertaining and I spent a few minutes just exploring what position I wanted to lay in when the movie started. When I decided to order food from the menu (which had quite a variety), I pressed the button on the side of my chair and was greeted by a waiter in five minutes. Payment was taken up front, and my food came out just in time for the movie. The experience was impeccable; the food was excellent, the staff was friendly, and the environment was laidback and comfortable. These are all reasons why The Spot is definitely in my top three movie eateries.
If you are looking for something local that will make you feel right at home when watching a new movie, buy your tickets and visit the Spot. You might be just as impressed as me, if not more.
